This is Wayan. I met him when exploring the dirt roads that lead into nowhere in Ubud, Bali. Whilst driving on the smallest possible way between rice terrace and a unforeseeable drop into the nothing I reached a dead end. I was super thirsty when I spotted or should I saw when I was spotted by Wayan. He kindly introduced himself and offered me a coconut. Which to my surprise he climbed up the tree and shared with me. See the photos below.
What is your name? Wayan
Where do you come from? I am from here, Ubud.
As a little child, do you remember what was your dream job? I always was told to work on the field, I didn't know anything else.
What is your profession now? I work the field, am security and gardener. I sold the land to rich foreigners but kept the right to work the field and I keep the rice.
Are you happy with your work life? There is always sadness but happiness is followed. I am happy that I can work the field. I am happy that I was able to sell the land to make a better life for my family and still can use my ancestors land.
If you could relive your life what advise would you give yourself? Learn to read and write
What does happiness mean for you? To have a lot of rice and food.
If you could grant yourself one wish, what would it be? Own the house on my land.
What is the most important thing in life? Love and smiling. Do good in this life and have a better life when you are born again.
What advise for life can you give me? Hard work brings you results. Love your family and don't think about the sadness think about the happiness. If you are tired or sad think about me and appreciate what you have my son.
Here Wayan is climbing up the palm tree effortlessly.
It looks like he only brought down one, but he threw down several basketball sized coconuts
After all, sharing is caring!
The innovative local way of a straw. DELICIOUS AND REFRESHING!
The scenery beyond the house and palm tree.
