Andre Maure, Teacher, Indonesia

I had come to meet Andre at a wedding couple of years ago and we are friends since. He teaches English as well as Indonesian. His passion is to teach and he does a great job at doing so which had taken him to Australia and around Indonesia with hopefully more destinations in the pipeline. I think in all the years that I know Andre he had never shown any negativity. He is always happy and positively minded, which is kind of contagious and therefore it is always great to be around him. As I am myself planning to go to Bali to study Indonesian and start an online business as luck might find it I might even get taught by my friend.

What is your name?
My name is Andre Maure

Where do you come from? I was born and grew up in Sumba, but my father is from Alor and my mother is from Sabu originally. All these islands belong to East Nusa Tenggara province, but now I live and work in Denpasar – Bali

As a little child, do you remember what was your dream job? I remember when I was asked about my dream job for the first time at primary school, I said that I wanted to be a teacher because my father was a high school teacher and he was the first teacher who inspired me as a child.

What is your profession now? I am now working as a language teacher. I teach English and Bahasa Indonesia. Besides teaching, I also do an online business which deals with video communication and promotion.

Are you happy with your work life? I am very happy and thankful to God for being a teacher because I can always meet many students from different backgrounds with different characteristics. I am also proud to be an Indonesian teacher because I can share about Indonesian language and cultures with people and friends from other countries.

If you could relive your life what advise would you give yourself? My advice would be learning to play musical instruments like guitar and piano. I should have done this when I was little because I love listening to music and sometimes I like singing. Unfortunately, I grew up in a neighbourhood where there was almost no exposure to live music or musical schools or courses where I could learn to play musical instruments.

What does happiness mean for you? For me happiness means doing things that can make other people happy and you yourself happy.

Was there a moment of doubt or darkness in your life? If so how did you manage to overcome this negativity? Yes, there was. It’s like two sides of coins, I do not only experience good things in life but also moments of doubts or darkness. Somehow, all these experiences have become great lessons for me to always think positive about my future and I believe that we can be, do, and have everything we want in life.

If you could grant yourself one wish, what would it be? I wish I could travel around the world to meet new friends and people from other countries and also learn new things or cultures, so one day when I come back to my hometown, I can share all my stories and experiences to inspire other people.

What is the most important thing in life? The most important thing in life to me is the relationship that I have with my family and best friends.

What advise for life can you give me? I always remember a saying; “Life is like a coin. You can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once.” So you should be wise and enjoy this life.

Andre came to Australia to teach Indonesian at a couple of local schools. He stayed with us for a few days whilst being in Perth.

Here teaching local students english in Bali and as you can see he is very popular with his students.

I first met Andre at a wedding of a prior mutual friend and since then we had been friends. This is now a couple of years ago.
